Elmhurst Geeks and the Rise of the Runelords
Shunned by years by the locals as a place of shadowy menace, The Misgivings, as it’s locally known, is the home of Aldern Foxglove. Sitting on a fog shrouded, rocky promontory overlooking the Varisian Gulf, until Aldern returned recently to reclaim his ancestral home, it has stood abandoned.
By spending some coin and hobnobbing the locals in the bars, the group was able to learn a few things about this manor:
“The old Foxglove Manor is about 80 years old now and it’s been in the Foxglove family ever since. A terrible tragedy struck the family a few decades ago and no one has lived there since. Now, I’m not saying it’s true, but some people say the place is haunted…”
“The manor, it’s called ‘The Misgivings,’ especially by the Varisians, but they imagine the worst in everything. It’s been said that strange lights have been seen in the attic windows, muffled sounds of screaming can be heard from above and below. Some, especially the kids, even say there’s a large bat-devil flying around. About twenty years ago, now, the Foxgloves lived there, but then a fire burned down the servant’s quarters. Cyralie Foxglove was found dead, burnt and dashed on the rocks below, rest her soul, and Traver Foxglove was found dead in his bedroom. They say he killed himself. The poor children, Aldern and Valeria, were found cowering in a closet; they were sent to Korvosa to be raised by relatives there.”
“I heard Aldern recently returned to live in the old place, but he’s had a devil of a time finding craftsmen willing to help with the reconstruction and repair work. It’s gotta be in bad shape. Until Aldern returned Rogors Craesby looked after the manor, he’d go there a few days a week to air the place out, check for squatters (but who’d be crazy enough to squat in the old place) and do what repairs he could. Never talked much about it, but never seemed worse for it.”
“The old place was built by a Vorel Foxglove, I think, some merchant prince from Magnimar. He and his family lived there for some 20 years before they all died from disease. The area wasn’t as civilized back then. The rest of the Foxgloves shunned the place for 40 years, until Traver moved in. And I’m sure you’ve heard what happened to him…”
